Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Spicer Powers Stars Past Fontbonne

The Dominican University men's volleyball team snapped a two-match losing skid, topping the Fontbonne University Griffins in four sets (25-11, 19-25, 25-15, 25-11) on Friday night behind a career-high 21 kills by freshman Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.).

Spicer was near perfect in the three sets Dominican won, going 6-0-8 (K-E-TA) in the first set, 6-0-6 in the third set and 7-1-9 in the match-clinching, fourth set.  It was the 11th double-digit kill effort for Spicer and the first time the freshman eclipsed the 20-kill mark.  His .679 hitting percentage was also a season-high for the St. Charles native.

Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) ran the Stars' offense, dishing out 43 assists with eight different players tallying a kill and the Stars hitting .408 in the match.  Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.) added ten kills while Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) tallied eight kills apiece.

Defensively, Coyne and Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) collected eight digs apiece while Solbrig was in on six, three solo and three assisted, of Dominican's eight total blocks.

Fontbonne, led by Stephen Lendy's ten kills, managed to hit just .071 for the match on 99 total attacks.

With the win, Dominican moves to 12-9 on the season and 7-3 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) with four regular season matches remaining, including tomorrow's tilt at Mount St. Joseph University with the #14 Lions.  First serve is slated for 3:00 p.m. EST in Cincinnati, Ohio.
