Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Stars Fall In Five To #14 Lions

The Dominican University men's volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the road at the #14 Mount St. Joseph University Lions before falling in five sets (25-27, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-11).

The Stars, after winning the first two sets, led 15-11 in the third set before the Lions went on a six-point run to take a 17-15 lead they would never relinquish.

In the fourth set, Dominican again opened an early lead, using a four-point run of their own to open a 15-12 lead before the Lions chipped away, eventually pulling in front 19-18.  The sides traded points all the way to 21-21 before a three-point swing for the Lions set up set point at 24-21.  After a sideout, the Lions evened the match at two sets apiece on a kill by Toby Birnbrich.

In the deciding fifth set, the Lions, leading 10-9, used a four-point run to open a 14-9 lead.  Dominican staved off match point twice with back-to-back kills by Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) before Alex Vohland sealed the Lions' comeback effort with his match-high 25th kill.

The Stars hit .194 in the loss, committing nine attack errors in the final two sets and 29 overall.  Spicer knocked down a team-high 16 kills while Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) also reached double-figures with 14 and ten kills respectively.  Sophomore Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) collected 49 assists.

Defensively, Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) tallied 13 digs while Spicer and Solbrig posted four total blocks each.

The loss drops the Stars to 12-10 overall and 7-4 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL).  The Stars return to action on Wednesday, hosting the Benedictine University Eagles for a 7:00 p.m. match in the Igini Sports Forum.
