The Dominican University men's volleyball team picked up a three-set (25-14, 25-18, 25-22) victory over the visiting Benedictine University Eagles in the Igini Sports Forum on Wednesday night to move to 13-10 on the season and 8-4 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL).
Â
Dominican was in complete control of the match most of the way, minus a brief three-point run for the Eagles in the third set that narrowed a 21-17 lead down to 22-21. However, the Stars responded, scoring three of the final four points of the set on kills by
Trevor Slonek (West Chicago, Ill.) and
Aidan Spangler (Western Springs, Ill.) sandwiched around an ace by
Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.) to put the match away.
Â
Freshman
Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) paced the Stars' offensive attack, knocking down a match-high ten kills, while Spangler added eight and Mead and
Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) tallied seven kills apiece. Sophomore setter
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) doled out 34 assists, connecting with seven different hitters in the winning effort.
Â
Defensively, the Stars limited the Benedictine offense to a .011 attack percentage with just 25 kills to 24 errors on 90 attacks. Libero
Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) logged a match-high 12 digs while Spicer was in on three of Dominican's five total blocks.
Â
The Stars close out the home portion of the 2015 schedule on Friday night, hosting the Loras College Duhawks for a 7:00 p.m. match in the Igini Sports Forum. Dominican then closes out the regular season on Wednesday, April 1, with a 7:00 p.m. match at Lakeland College.
