Stars Split Day One Of East Coast Swing

The Dominican University men's volleyball team traveled to Boston, for a five-match road trip starting with the #6-ranked Springfield College Pride and Johnson & Wales University (RI) on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Massachusetts.  The Stars fell in three sets to the Pride (25-17, 25-17, 25-23) before upending the JWU Wildcats in four sets (23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16).
 
In the loss to Springfield, the Stars hit just .181 with 17 attack errors to 30 kills on 72 attempts while the Pride hit an efficient .343 with 30 kills and just ten errors.
 
Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) and Trevor Slonek (West Chicago, Ill.) paced the Stars' attack with seven and six kills respectively.  The Stars' middles also committed just two errors combined with Solbrig hitting a blistering .875.  Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) doled out 29 assists to an offense that saw five different players tally at least four kills.
 
The Stars' attack rebounded in the second match of the day, hitting .303 in the win over the Wildcats.  Freshmen Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) and Brad McFarland (Tinley Park, Ill.) led the way with 15 and 14 kills respectively while Solbrig added ten kills of his own while hitting an even .500 in the winning effort.
 
Coyne averaged better than 11 assists per set, collecting 46 assists in the four-set victory.
 
Defensively, Robert Mead (Darien, Ill.) collected a team-high 14 digs while Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) added ten.
 
The split pushes the Stars to 8-7 on the season with a pair of matches at Lasell College on tap for Sunday.  Dominican opens with an 11:00 AM EST match against the host Lasers and then take on Endicott College at 1:00 PM EST.
