The Dominican University baseball team picked up their first win of the season on Monday evening, topping the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Panthers 9-8 in ten innings.
Â
Cody Mueller (Addison, III.) threw the ninth and tenth innings to pick up the win out of the bullpen, striking out three while surrendering just one single, while
Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) hit his first home run of the season, going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored.
Â
The Stars jumped out to an 8-4 lead after four innings.Â
Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up an RBI single in the first ahead of
Richie Green (Chicago, III.) who plated two, lining a double over the head of the Panthers' left fielder.
Â
The Stars then put together a four-run third after Pitt-Bradford scored three in the second. Janison doubled to center to bring home Milne Rojek and
Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.).Â
Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.) then legged out a fielder's choice allowing
Tim Varallo (Chicago, III.) to score from third and freshman
Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, III.) then roped a double down the third base line plating Janison.
Â
Milne Rojek's solo shot to right was the Stars' first hit off of the Panthers' Scottie Frisina who came on in relief in the third.
Â
Frisina then stalled the Dominican offense until the tenth while the Panthers chipped away at the Stars' lead, eventually evening the game in the bottom of the eighth on Evan Showers' single to right that pushed across Connor Borowski.
Â
After both teams went down in order in the ninth, McKinney started off extras with an infield single off of Frisina. After Natividad bunted into a fielder's choice,
J.T. Hicks (Albion, Mich.) looped a pinch-hit single to left. After a flyout, Frisina was lifted for Mike Para to face Milne Rojek. Milne Rojek hitting a bouncing ball to second that got past Jay Clinger, allowing Natividad to score the go-ahead run.
Â
Mueller then pitched around a one-out single in the ninth to preserve the win.
Â
Daniel Supple (Albany, Calif.) got the start for Dominican, surrendering seven runs but just two earned, on seven hits and four walks over 5.1 innings of work while striking out two.Â
Quinten Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) then took over, scattering four hits over the next 2.2 innings, allowing one run before turning the game over to Mueller.
Â
Offensively, the Stars legged out 11 hits, including five extra-base hits. Milne Rojek, Janison and McKinney had two hits apiece with Janison driving in three.
Â
Dominican, now 1-2, returns to Terry Park on Tuesday morning, taking on the Mitchell College Mariners at 9:00 a.m. EST before a day off on Wednesday.
