Offense Stalls As Stars Drop NACC Doubleheader

One day after collecting 28 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from Aurora University, the Dominican University baseball team managed just seven hits in dropping a doubleheader to the visiting Edgewood College Eagles at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Stars, now 10-14 overall and 7-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), will hit the road this week for a pair of non-conference games against Wheaton and Elmhurst colleges before returning to Schaumburg next Saturday for a NACC series against the Concordia University Chicago Cougars.

Game One:  Edgewood 4, Dominican 3

The Eagles executed a double steal with runners at the corners and nobody out in the top of the ninth to manufacture the go-ahead run in a 3-2 win.

Daniel Supple (Albany, Calif.) took the loss for Dominican despite surrendering just three runs in eight-plus innings of work.  The sophomore scattered eight hits and four walks while striking out five but falls to 1-3 on the season in six starts this season.

Edgewood took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second as Supple walked the first hitter of the inning before hitting the second batter.  After a double steal put runners at second and third, Nick Lehner delivered a two-run single to right.

The Stars cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a pair of Edgewood errors.  Dominican then evened the score in the bottom of the fifth when Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) picked up a two-out single to score Lucas McKinney (Arvada, Colo.).

However, Dominican's offense stalled after the fifth, hitless in their last 12 plate appearances of the game and managing just three base runners after the fifth.

McKinney scored both of Dominican's runs and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.  Schuster had the Stars' only other hit in the game.

Game Two:  Edgewood 11, Dominican 1

Edgewood scored early in often in game two, sending Dominican's Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) to an early exit in his fifth start of the season on the mound.  Janison lasted just three innings and the Eagles led 9-0 in the middle of the fourth before the Stars tallied their lone run of the game.

Dominican's Richie Green (Chicago, III.) had the Stars' only RBI, plating Schuster with a single to center with two outs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Stars managed just four hits off Edgewood's Steve Gavin who went the distance for his third win of the season.
