Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Play Bears To Draw

The Dominican University men's soccer team traveled down to St. Louis in search of a result on Saturday, returning with a 1-1 draw against the Washington University-St. Louis Bears in a very physical match that featured 37 fouls and six cautions to move to 2-1-1 on the 2015 season.

Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) faced 25 shots, making ten saves, as Dominican was outshot 25-4 over the 110 minute draw.

"Gongora was fantastic tonight and needed to be for us to stay in that game," commented head coach Erick Baumann when asked about his goalkeeper's play.  "He made multiple first class saves and probably played the most complete game of his career tonight in a huge regional rivalry matchup for us."

Dominican got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead on a set piece that saw freshman Tomasz Ratajczyk (Chicago, Ill.) tally his first goal of the season with an assist from Frankie Saiz (Naperville, Ill.) in the 11th minute.  The goal came on Dominican's first shot of the match.

The Bears leveled the score in the 28th minute, when Ryan Sproule notched his first goal of the season.

Despite 16 shots from the Bears in the second half, the Dominican defense would not crack again, earning the Stars a quality result against a strong Central Region opponent.

"We came to get a result on the road and we got one of the two we were looking for," said Baumann.  "The guys stuck together under a lot of pressure from a very good team, competing until the final whistle."

The Stars continue their non-conference slate on Wednesday, traveling to North Central to take on the Cardinals in an 8:00 p.m. kickoff at Wehrli Stadium in Naperville.  Dominican then heads to North Park next Saturday, September 19, before opening Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on Wednesday, September 23, at Wisconsin Lutheran.
