Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hernandez Leads Stars Past Cardinals

The Dominican University men's soccer team topped the North Central College Cardinals, 2-1, on Wednesday night in Naperville, Illinois, behind two goals from freshman Iven Hernandez (Antioch, Ill.).  The Stars' freshman now has five goals in his first five collegiate matches, including a pair of two goal performances both coming in 2-1 wins for Dominican.

It didn't take long for Hernandez to strike, putting his stamp on the match in the third minute when he carried up the right flank, getting in behind the Cardinals' backline before beating the Cardinals' Justin De Boer with the first shot of the match.

North Central leveled the score less than four minutes later, taking advantage of a set piece when Karl Bappert got on the end of Ryan O'Deen's corner kick service, driving a header into the back of the Dominican goal.

Hernandez put the Stars back on top in the 27th minute, scoring what proved to be the game-winner with an assist from Zack Venzon (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).

For the first half, Dominican outshot the Cardinals 5-3, putting three shots on goal while the Cardinals managed just one shot on frame.

"I thought we played well in the first half," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head men's soccer coach.  "We moved the ball well and scored two nice goals.  However, as well as we played, we can't give up that corner and that goal, allowing them back in the match after we scored just three minutes in."

Baumann continued, "in the second half we got caught up in their direct play and couldn't find our game."

Neither team could find the back of the goal over the final 45 minutes, trading three shots apiece with Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) logging one save in the second half while De Boer was forced to make two saves.

"I'm looking forward to getting back on the training field," said Baumann.  "We will keep working to get better.  The team is coming along and has done well with the tough schedule we put together so far."

The schedule Baumann refers to, ranked 46th in NCAA Division III men's soccer, out of over 400 programs, for strength of schedule heading into Wednesday's tilt with the Cardinals.  The road does not get any easier as Dominican continues its swing of non-conference tilts on Saturday, traveling to North Park University for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against the Vikings, ranked sixth in the Central Region in this week's NSCAA Division III rankings.
