The Dominican University women's tennis team dropped a pair of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) dual matches, falling to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors and Alverno College Inferno, both by counts of 7-2.
Â
After an hour delay to clear the courts from early morning rain, Dominican's number two doubles team of
Morganne Schmidt (West Dundee, Ill.) and
Gabriella Curran (Elmhurst, Ill.) scored the Stars' first point of the match, taking an 8-5 win over the Warriors' Tabitha Schutz and Emily Boyd. However, Dominican could only manage one more point the rest of the way, with sophomore
Carmelita Villalobos (Addison, Ill.) scoring a straight-sets win over Paige Potaracke, 7-5, 6-2.
Â
The afternoon match followed similar suit with Dominican managing one point in doubles action, that coming from Villalobos and teammate
Megan Hickey (Plainfield, Ill.) at number one doubles, and one point in singles action, coming on Hickey's 6-1, 6-1 win over the Inferno's Brittanie Ward at number two singles.
Â
"We continue to fight hard," said first-year head coach
Bob Almada of his young Dominican squad.
Â
The Stars are now 1-4 on the season and 1-3 in the NACC. Dominican will be back in action on Tuesday, September 15, traveling to Elmhurst, Illinois, to take on the Elmhurst College Bluejays in a non-conference dual.Â
