Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team saw their four-match unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday night, suffering a 2-0 loss to the North Park University Vikings in Chicago.
Â
A scoreless tie quickly turned into a two-goal lead for the Vikings with back-to-back scores just 71 seconds apart in the 75
th and 76
th minutes. Michal Walaszek tallied the game-winner when he was played a through-ball and then outran his defender, creating a 1v1 with Dominican's goalkeeper
Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.). With Gongora off his line and trying to take away any angles, Walaszek slid a shot past Gongora and inside the near post.
Â
Moments later it was Pedram Tahmi-Masoleh that added an insurance marker before the Stars could reorganize.
Â
Tahmi-Masoleh had a chance to give the Vikings a lead in the first half after the Vikings were awarded a penalty kick but Gongora made a spectacular save, diving to his right and covering the post.
Â
Iven Hernandez (Antioch, Ill.), Dominican's leading goal scorer on the season with five, nearly pulled Dominican back within one goal late in the match when he drove a shot from 25-yards out in the 87
th minute but his strike was punched over the crossbar by North Park's Christopher Tomuta who picked up the shutout, logging four saves.
Â
"I wish we could have ended this six-match non-conference stretch with a better result," commented
Erick Baumann, Dominican University's head men's soccer coach. "Now it is time to focus on our conference schedule and the opener on Wednesday night."
Â
The loss drops the Stars to 3-2-1 overall with Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play opening up on Wednesday when the Stars travel to Milwaukee to take on the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Warrior Soccer Field at the Krauss-Miller-Lutz Outdoor Athletic Complex.
