Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second Half Surge Powers Stars Past Muskies

The Dominican University men's soccer team scored four second half goals and hung their second consecutive shutout and third of the season as the Stars topped the visiting Lakeland College Muskies, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.

Jonathan Arzeta (Des Plaines, Ill.) and Alexander Lulek (Glenview, Ill.) tallied two goals apiece, including the game-winner for Arzeta, while Alex Rohder (Orland Park, Ill.) logged two assists for Dominican in the winning effort.

"We had a very slow start but finished well," said Dominican's head coach Erick Baumann when asked about his team's performance. "It was nice to see some of our regulars start to get their game back on track and to see some guys come off our bench and give good minutes."

For Arzeta, the goals were the first of the season after the sophomore scored two goals in Dominican's three preseason matches.

"For me it is all mental," said Arzeta when asked to compare Saturday's match to the first six matches of the 2015 season. "If I have the right positive mindset, I'm going to be successful.  If I fail, my teammates are going to be there to pick me up."

The game-winner came for Arzeta in the 16th minute when the sophomore capitalized on a Lakeland mistake.  Thomish Mannebach, the Lakeland goalkeeper, tried to cover up service off a restart near the left corner, but in diving on the ball, Mannebach lost the ball right to Arzeta who shot into an open goal on the Stars' first shot of the match.

The score remained 1-0 throughout the remainder of the first 45 minutes, despite a 5-2 advantage in shots for Dominican during the first half.

The Stars came out aggressive in the second half scoring less than three minutes into the half when Benjamin Ibarra (Skokie, Ill.) served a ball from the right-back towards the back post where Rohder laid a ball with his head back to the near post for Arzeta who buried the shot, giving Dominican a two-goal advantage.

Dominican went nearly 30 minutes before their next goal but then opened the match up with three goals over the final 14 minutes.  Adam Yaghmour (Norridge, Ill.) got in the goal column in the 77th minute, getting on the end of a corner service from Nestor Ascencio (Streamwood, Ill.) while Lulek, a freshman, had the final two goals, playing in less than 30 minutes.

For the match, the Stars outshot the Muskies 17-7, putting 12 shots on frame compared to one on goal for Lakeland.

Dominican took advantage of a number of restart opportunities, scoring on two of 11 corner kick opportunities and scoring two other goals on restarts after Lakeland fouls.

The Stars are now 4-2-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), with a conference tilt with the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Wednesday at West Campus Field.  Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.
