Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Golden In Overtime Win

The Dominican University men's soccer team outlasted the visiting Concordia University Chicago Cougars, 1-0 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field on Benjamin Ibarra's (Skokie, Ill.) first goal of the season in the 100th minute of play.  With the win, the Stars improve to 5-2-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).

"We struggled to be effective in the final third of the field today," commented Erick Baumann after his team's first overtime win of the season.

"Some of that is a credit to CUC and the way they played," continued Baumann. "With that said, we kept a clean sheet, only allowing five shots and two on goal, and got the goal we needed."

The Stars dominated possession throughout the match and outshot the Cougars 16-5, creating opportunities with restarts, including nine corner kicks.  It was one of the restarts that eventually lifted Dominican to victory as Ibarra's run at the goal mouth was set up by Alex Rohder's (Orland Park, Ill.) long throw-in that bounced through the Cougars' six-yard box.

"Defensively we shut them down and put ourselves in a good position to only have to score one goal," said Dominican's junior captain Zack Venzon (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).  "We only gave up two shots on goal but offensively we had chances and need to put one in the back of the goal.  The shutout is the most important part."

Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) faced five shots, logging two saves in posting his third straight shutout and fourth of the season, lowering his goals against average to 0.65 for the season.

The Stars will return to the West Campus pitch on Saturday, hosting the Marian University Sabres for a noon kickoff as part of Dominican University's Homecoming 2015.
