Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Stars Move to 3-0 On the Season

The Dominican University men's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday to move to 3-0 on the season, rallying to edge the Benedictine University Eagles in five sets (25-22, 24-26, 22-25, 33-31, 15-10) before rolling past the Calumet College Crimson Wave in three sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-18).

Against the Eagles, Dominican staved off match-point four times in the fourth set to force the deciding fifth set and then put the Eagles away.  Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) led the way for the Stars, knocking down a career-high 29 kills on 62 total attacks.   The Stars' sophomore standout added four block assists and eight digs in the all-around effort.

Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.), Dominican's junior setter, posted his first double-double of the season with 59 assists and ten digs while Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) collected a team-high 16 digs.

Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.), a 2015 AVCA First Team All-American, posted 14 kills on 28 swings and added seven total blocks and served two aces for a total of 20.0 points.

The Eagles were paced by Sterling Glover's 17 kills.

In the win over the Crimson Wave, Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and Charlie Spry (Barrington, Ill.) shared team-high honors with five kills apiece while Nevrly again logged double-digit digs with 12 in the three sets.

"It's nice to start the season off with three wins," said Dominican's third-year head coach Dan Ames.  "Each match has shown us some things we are good at and the things we still need to work on.  It was a battle against Benedictine and we were lucky enough that Luke and our middles stepped up and carried us on their shoulders offensively while Brooks led the defensive effort."

Dominican looks to remain perfect when they return home next Sunday, hosting Graceland University for a 5:00 p.m. match.
