The Dominican University men's basketball team picked up back-to-back wins for the first time in over three years, topping the Maranatha Baptist University Sabrecats 71-68 on Tuesday evening in the Igini Sports Forum after scoring a road win at Edgewood on Saturday. Dominican erased an 18-point second half deficit, outscoring the Sabrecats 39-18 over the final 14 minutes to pick up their fourth win of the season.
Trailing 50-32 with 14:11 to go, the Stars went on a 9-4 run capped by
Mike Lizak's (Norridge, Ill.) lay in over the next 4:13 to pull within 11 at 54-43.
The Stars continued to chip away at the lead, cutting the deficit below double-digits when Lizak hit a corner three from in front of the Dominican bench before
Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) scored three straight to pull the Stars within seven, 58-51, with 8:03 to play.
Three minutes later,
Mike Bobek (Orland Hills, Ill.) ran down a loose ball in the corner after Lizak converted on the front-end of a two-shot foul. Bobek gathered himself and knocked down a step-back three to narrow the gap to five, 62-57.
After a Sabrecats bucket, Dominican scored 12 straight over a 2:35 span to take a 69-65 lead. During the run, freshman
Isaac Moore (Chicago, Ill.) connected on a corner three before Lizak gave the Stars their first lead of the second half when he converted a pair of free throws with 3:34 to go.
Maranatha Baptist had their chances in the final minute but Kyle Brown's long two from the top of the key came up short and seconds later freshman
Derek Steck (New Berlin, Wis.) turned away Brown's layup to preserve the win.
The Stars, led by Robertson's 19 points, managed to shoot just 33.8 percent, 23-for-68, but forced 22 Maranatha Baptist turnovers that led to 22 points off of turnovers and out-rebounded the Sabrecats 40-33, pulling down 20 offensive rebounds for 23 second chance points.
Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) scored 15 points for the Stars while Lizak added a season-high 11 points in the winning effort.
For the Sabrecats, Zachary Terpstra led the way with 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting before fouling out with 23 seconds to play.
The Stars, now 4-13 on the season, return to the court on Saturday, hosting the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors for a 2:00 p.m. Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) contest.
