Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stars Sunk On Buzzer Beater

The Dominican University men's basketball team erased a 15-point second half deficit, evening the score at 70-70 on a three by Rich Bodee (Darien, Ill.) with 2.9 seconds to play, only to see Wisconsin Lutheran's Tanner Schieve knock down a three from 36-feet as time expired to sink the Stars, 76-73.

Trailing 63-50 with 5:50 to go, Dominican's Derek Steck (New Berlin, Wis.) found Tim Robertson (Chicago, Ill.) underneath the basket to start a 20-7 run for the Stars that spanned 5:44.  On the run, Mike Lizak (Norridge, Ill.) buried a three from the right win to trim the Warriors' lead to 63-55.  After the Warriors converted on the second of two free throws, Josh Mayberry (Canton, Mich.) scored four straight for Dominican to get the Stars within 65-58.

After trading baskets, Bodee connected on a wing-three to narrow the gap down to four, 69-65, with 1:33 to go.  After a defensive stop, Mayberry pulled the Stars within two on a short jumper in the paint.

A Warriors' dunk by Jim Marose with just 16 seconds to play seemingly put the game out of reach but Dominican raced up the floor with Mayberry connecting from 25 feet to pull Dominican within one, 71-70 with 13 seconds remaining.

After Wisconsin Lutheran's Jake Jarnigo converted on a pair of free throws, Mayberry drew a double-team leaving Bodee open for three on the left wing.  The junior launched a high-arching three that went through the net with 2.9 seconds to go.  The Warriors elected not to call a timeout, inbounding to Shieve who used three dribbles before pulling up for the game-winner.

The three was the lone field goal for Schieve who finished with four points on 1-of-4 shooting.  For the Warriors, freshman Collin Kennedy led the way with a game-high 24 points on 9-for-12 shooting while Chase Nowak added 18 points as the Warriors shot 45-percent from the field.

For Dominican, Mayberry paced four in double-figures with a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds.  Robertson added 16 while Bodee and freshman Antonio Amoah (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 12 and ten respectively.  As a team, the Stars shot 46-percent from the field but turned the ball over 20 times, leading to 22 points for the Warriors.

The loss drops Dominican to 4-14 on the year and 2-11 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).  The Stars will be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Rockford to take on the Rockford University Regents.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
