Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Slip Past Spartans

The Dominican University men's soccer team extended their winning streak to nine matches on Wednesday afternoon, slipping past the Aurora University Spartans 1-0 on Nestor Ascencio's goal in the 79th minute.

"It's nice to get the shutout win but we should expect better and more of ourselves and each other," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach. "We did not execute our game plan and didn't come out on our home field and outwork them. It looked like they wanted the game more than we did."

Baumann continued, "The second half was different but the motivation needs to come from within each player from the first whistle.  I know we are much better than we showed today."

On a wet field in a steady rain, the Stars outshot the Spartans 10-6, 6-2 in the first half, but could not beat the Spartans' Zach McFarland until Jonathan Arzeta rebounded his own point-blank shot in the 79th minute that was saved by McFarland before rolling a pass to Ascencio who one-touched in for his second game-winner of the season.

Dominican's Gabriel Gongora made three saves in the winning effort to post his eighth shutout of the season, lowering his goals against average to 0.57.

The win pushes the Stars' overall record to 9-2-2 overall and a perfect 7-0-0 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.  On Saturday, Dominican will host the 2015 NACC regular season champions, the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.  Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
