Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stars Knock Off Second-Place Eagles

The Dominican University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over the visiting Edgewood College Eagles on Saturday afternoon at West Campus Field.  With the win, the Stars remain in a tie for third place in the conference standings with a total of 18 points heading into the final Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) game of the season.

"We came out sharp and ready to play," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach. "We knew the importance of this game and knew the challenge we were going to have.  We came out prepared and executed. I was very pleased with our play."

The Stars opened the scoring in the 11th minute of play, taking advantage of a restart in the attacking third.  Kaitlyn Tripp served a ball into the penalty box that freshman Josseline Williams flicked through the six-yard box where classmate Alexis Hoskins knocked it home for the rookie's sixth goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 throughout the remainder of the opening half with Dominican dominating possession and getting off eight shots while surrendering just two.

In the second half, Dominican added to its lead in the 75th minute when Tania Paez made a quick turn to the middle of the field to get into the penalty box before sliding a pass towards the back post where Jackie Viola knocked it in for her sixth score of the season.

Dominican held a 14-4 advantage in shots, putting nine on goal compared to just one on goal for the Eagles.  Senior Vanessa Gonzalez picked up the shutout, logging one save in her eighth start of the season.

The Stars, now 11-5-0 on the season and 6-3-0 in NACC play, close out the 2016 regular season on Wednesday, hosting the Benedictine University Eagles for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff at West Campus Field.
