The Dominican University women's volleyball team started slow but was able to shake off the MSOE Raiders, winning in four sets (22-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-21) on Friday night in the Igini Sports Forum.
Freshman
Katelyn Flayter, appearing in just her fourth match of the season and making her first start, paced the Stars' offensive attack with 12 kills on 34 swings while committing just two errors.
"I was really impressed with Katelyn's play tonight," commented Dominican's head coach,
Jeanne Czipri, following the match. "She has been very aggressive in practice and earned the start tonight. She was a big part of this win."
Flayter was especially good in the second and fourth sets, collecting five kills on eight swings in the second and four kills on nine swings in the deciding set while committing just one error.
Junior
Kendyl Todd shared match-high honors with Flayter with 12 kills while
Rosalyn Wyse and
Tessa Griparis added ten and nine kills respectively. Sophomore setter
Jackie Mursuli ran the offense to a .192 attack percentage, doling out 42 assists.
Defensively, Dominican was led by
Audrey Wyse's 24 digs while freshman
Amanda Ricca added a season-high 15 digs. At the net, Griparis got in on four total blocks, including one solo, as Dominican tallied five blocks to hold the Raiders to a .096 attack percentage.
"I'm glad to get the win tonight," said Czipri, "and happy to see our offense do some good things. Jackie is using all of her attackers and that is exciting. Defensively, Audrey was really impressive after the first set."
With the win, the Stars improve to 9-17 overall and 7-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC). Dominican will head to Alverno College on Saturday for a noon match with the Inferno. The Stars can secure the third seed in the 2016 NACC Women's Volleyball Tournament with a win, earning the right to host a conference tournament quarterfinal match on Tuesday, November 1.
