The Dominican University women's soccer team is back in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament semifinals for the third consecutive year, Saturday topping the Benedictine University Eagles 2-0 in the tournament's quarterfinals. Freshman
Josseline Williams netted both of the Stars' goals in her first collegiate postseason action.
"She has been huge for us since day one," commented Dominican's
Carlos Carrillo when asked about Williams. "She has been a worker and has earned everything she has been doing."
"We came out again sharp and organized like we did the last game," continued Carrillo. "We tried to jump on them early on and we did and then stayed organized throughout the match and continued to work."
Williams's first tally came in the game's 12
th minute when
Kaitlyn Tripp's long service connected with
Tania Paez who was able to flick for Williams behind the Eagles' backline. Williams took one touch to the top of the 18-yard box before beating Benedictine's Cassidy Henson inside the near post. The score was the fifth game-winner for Williams.
The Stars played with the 1-0 advantage into the 73
rd minute when
Nina Izzo chipped a pass for Williams at the top of the box. Williams was able to settle and turn to the outside to split two defenders before sliding a low shot inside the far post for an insurance goal.
Williams now has 12 goals and 27 points on her rookie campaign, both ranking second in the NACC.
Senior goalkeeper
Vanessa Gonzalez posted her third consecutive shutout and fourth straight win, facing three shots and making two saves. Gonzalez now has four shutouts in 765 minutes in goal.
