The Dominican University women's soccer team earned a trip to the 2016 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament Championship match advancing 4-2 on penalty kicks after the teams played to a 1-1 draw through two overtimes. For the Stars, it will be the program's fourth trip to the conference championship match in program history and first NACC finals appearance since 2010.
"We went down 1-0 in the first half but it didn't seem to faze the team," commented third-year head coach
Carlos Carrillo. "We kept working and regrouped at the half. In the second half, we came out sharp and fast, putting them under a lot of pressure and were able to tie the game up in just five minutes. We continued to play well throughout the second half and both overtimes. We had a number of chances but could not capitalize. In the penalties, we were prepared and confident. I can't say enough how proud I am of the team. Now we look forward to Saturday and a rematch with MSOE."
Despite getting off just two shots in the first half, Edgewood took a 1-0 lead in the 42
nd minute, capitalizing on their lone corner kick of the half. Carley Hanko's service from the corner skipped past Dominican's
Vanessa Gonzalez and bounced through traffic before Taylor Pampuch knocked it in for the game's first goal.
The Stars outshot the Eagles 4-2 in the first half, putting two shots on goal while Edgewood managed just one on frame.
In the second half, Dominican's
Josseline Williams leveled the score in the 50
th minute of play.
Alyssa Messina maintained possession for the Stars in the corner before poking a pass back to Ashley Torres who found Williams along the top of the 18-yard box. Williams turned middle and struck a shot from 15 yards that beat Edgewood's Sabelle Seabrook under the crossbar. For Williams, the goal was the 13
th of her freshman season and third in the NACC Tournament.
Dominican had seven more shots in the second half, putting three on goals, but could not score the go-ahead goal.
The score remained tied through two overtimes, sending the game to penalty kicks to determine who would meet MSOE in the final.
Williams set the tone for the Stars in the shootout round, burying Dominican's first shot. After Edgewood's Stevie Grable hit the crossbar with her penalty, Seabrook stopped Dominican's
Kaitlyn Tripp before Gonzalez covered the right post to stop Pampuch. Ashley Torres,
Alyssa Messina and
Alexis Hoskins then buried Dominican's next three penalties to secure the shootout victory.
The Stars, now 13-5-1 on the season, will head to Milwaukee on Saturday to take on the top-seeded MSOE Raiders for a 1:00 p.m. match at Viets Field. The winner of the match will claim the NACC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.
