The Dominican University women's soccer team picked up just their second win in program history over the Aurora University Spartans, topping the Spartans in double-overtime on
Josseline Williams's golden goal in the 109
th minute.
"From the first player to the last player, everybody came out with passion, desire and heart," commented head coach
Carlos Carrillo, "and it showed from the first whistle to the last whistle."
The Stars took an early 1-0 lead when Williams created a turnover inside the Aurora 18-yard box, picking off a pass from Aurora's goalkeeper, Caitlin deRuiter. In traffic, Williams was able to poke a pass to
Tania Paez who rolled a pass along the top of the 18-yard box to
Jackie Viola who knocked in a shot for her fourth goal of the season in the sixth minute of play.
Dominican maintained the one-goal lead through the first half with each team getting off four shots and taking two corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Spartans, needing to equalize, pressed forward and got off six shots, finally leveling the score in the 77
th minute when Alexis Abelove took advantage of a counter for her second goal of the season.
After a scoreless first overtime that saw just one shot, Dominican went on the attack in the second overtime, getting off three shots, including a shot by Williams that rattled off the post in the 106
th minute. Then in the 108
th minute, Dominican nearly scored off a corner kick when
Kaitlyn Tripp got on the end of
Alyssa Messina's service, flicking a shot that sailed over the crossbar.
Then in the 109
th minute, with 78 seconds remaining in the match, freshman
Alexis Hoskins won a 50/50 ball near midfield and released pressure when she played to Messina. After initially turning to the sideline, Messina found the feet of Paez who one-touched Viola. After a touch, Viola slipped to Williams near the top of the 18-yard box with her back to the goal. Williams spun over her right shoulder, took a touch and ripped a left-footed shot to the far post that beat deRuiter for Williams's second golden goal in four matches.
"It was a great win in the middle of the field," said Carrillo. "Viola played a great ball into Josseline's feet for her to be able to bury a shot with her left foot. As hard as she works, it was great to see her score that goal."
Pamela Ruiz logged one save to pick up the win in goal, facing 12 shots.
The Stars, now 8-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), will hit the road on Wednesday, traveling up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for a 7:00 p.m. match at Wisconsin Lutheran College.
