The Dominican University women's basketball team fell on Friday night in the first of back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri, falling 56-40 to the Spalding University Golden Eagles at Webster University.
Â
"The first road game gave us some challenges," commented head coach
Gabby Johnson following the loss. "We learned a valuable lesson that when your shots aren't falling you have to defend. When we finally settled down, we were able to compete better in the second half."
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the contest on a 19-0 run and outscored the Stars 19-2 in the first quarter. The Stars shot just 1-for-13 in the opening quarter while Spalding converted on eight of its 21 field goal attempts in the quarter and controlled the glass, outrebounding Dominican 19-7.
Â
Spalding' lead grew to 36-12 at the half before Dominican outscored the Golden Eagles, 28-20, in the second half.
Â
Angela Evola was the only player for Dominican to reach double-figures, dropping in 12 points on 4-for-10 shooting from the field in 31 minutes off the Stars' bench. Freshman
Timiya Ray followed up her opening night double-double with seven points and ten rebounds in the losing effort.
Â
The loss drops Dominican to 1-1 on the season with a meeting with the host Webster University Gorloks on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
