The Dominican University men's volleyball team ran their winning streak to four matches, topping the 12
th-ranked Mount St. Joseph Lions in four sets, 18-25, 25-9, 25-23, 26-24, in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Saturday afternoon. The Stars posted 14 blocks, all coming after the first set, to rally for the victory.
"The team showed that at times we have the ability to put a team away from the very start," said Dominican University's
Dan Ames following the match. "We will build on this weekend and learn to put opponents away from the very beginning of matches and sets."
"We've told the team this is now playoff volleyball," continued Ames. "Every point; every set; every match matters."
The Stars hit .269 for the match behind setter
Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) who doled out 46 assists with
Jeremy Royko (Naperville, Ill.) and
Luke Spicer (St. Charles, Ill.) collecting 14 and 13 kills respectively.
Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.), a 2015 AVCA First Team All-American, complemented his six kills on ten swings with seven total blocks at the net. The 6'7 Solbrig posted four solo blocks and added three block assists for a total of 11.5 points for the match.
Aidan Spangler (Western Springs, Ill.) and Coyne also posted four total blocks apiece while Spicer finished the afternoon with three block assists.
In the back row, junior libero
Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.) topped ten digs for the seventh time in nine matches with 15 digs in the four-set effort.
Across the net, Alex Vohland carried the Lions with a match-high 18 kills on 49 attacks while Zach Kuebler and Lyle Lehmann logged ten digs apiece.
The Stars, now 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL), will go for a program record-tying fifth straight win when they return to the Igini Sports Forum to host the Greenville College Panthers for 3:00 p.m. match.
