Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Stars Sweep Duhawks For MCVL Win

The Dominican University men's volleyball team cruised to a three-set (25-17, 25-21, 25-21) win over the Loras College Duhawks in the Igini Sports Forum on Saturday afternoon to pick up their first win of the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) season.  The win, the second for the Stars in as many days, pushes the #12 Stars to 5-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play.

"The boys played well," said Dominican's third-year head coach Dan Ames following the win.  "They had a couple of moments where they sort of cruised and that is something we are talking about as a team that we can't allow."

"They did a better job of that in the second set to close it out but when they have an opportunity to close a team out, they need to do it."

Zach Sinn (Winfield, Ill.) knocked down a match-high 11 kills for Dominican who hit .349 for the match.  Junior setter Alex Coyne (Naperville, Ill.) surpassed 2,000 career assists as he doled out 37 assists while utilizing seven different hitters.

Mason Solbrig (Lindenhurst, Ill.) collected 9.5 total points for the Stars in the win, posting five kills, five total blocks (2 solo, 3 assisted) and serving up one ace.

Defensively, Brooks Nevrly (Downers Grove, Ill.), who surpassed 500 career digs last night, continued to lead the Stars' effort, collecting 14 digs.

For the Duhawks, Jimmy Combs and Greg Kinney shared team-high honors with seven kills apiece.

Dominican returns to MCVL action next weekend, hitting the road for Ohio where the Stars will battle Wittenberg College on Friday night before squaring off with the Mount St. Joseph Lions, ranked 11th in the week two AVCA Men's Division III Coaches Top 15 Poll.

"Wittenberg is a first-year program but was undefeated coming into the week," said Ames.  "It is going to be a battle while Mount St. Joe's has been neck and neck with us for the last two years.  We always look forward to going there to battle them."
