The Dominican University women's basketball team trailed just nine at the half but the second half was all Lakeland College as the Stars fell to the Muskies, 87-44, on Saturday evening in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Â
"This is the second time we have played well in the first half and then another team showed up after halftime," said
Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach in her fourth season. "We have to learn to string two strong halves together."
Â
The Muskies controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Stars 52-30, including pulling down 19 offensive rebounds, and forced 23 Dominican turnovers, leading to 27 points off of turnovers for Lakeland.
Â
"We struggled to keep them off the offensive boards," commented Johnson. "We just got out-worked and out-executed."
Â
Allie Tapanes (Winfield, Ill.) scored 17 points in the losing effort, connecting on five of her 13 attempts from beyond the three-point arc.Â
Shamia Clark (Rock Island, Ill.) added 11 points on 5-for-11 shooting but the rest of the Dominican lineup managed just five field goals all game.
Â
For the Muskies, Bailey Grayvold led five in double-figures, dropping in a game-high 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field.
Â
Dominican, now 3-18 on the season and 2-14 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), will host Aurora University on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
