Stars Split Twinbill With Newbury

The Dominican University baseball team split a doubleheader with the Newbury College Nighthawks on Friday morning, claiming game one 3-2 before dropping game two 9-6 to move to 5-5 on the season with a 9:00 a.m. game against the United States Coast Guard Academy on getaway day tomorrow.

Game One: Dominican 3, Newbury 2

The Stars scratched across a single run in each of the first three innings in support of Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) and then held on for a 3-2 win over the Nighthawks.

Mike Piotrowski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) picked up an RBI single in the top of the first and and Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) had one in the top of the second before the Stars scored on a wild pitch in the third.

The Nighthawks' pulled within in a run in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Zahornasky homered off the foul pole in left with Ian Hruniak aboard but failed to scratch across the tying run in the seventh when James McGorry grounded out to third with runners at second and third to end the ballgame.

Janison limited the Nighthawks to just two runs on eight hits over the seven innings to move to 1-2 on the year on the mound.  The 6'2 right-hander walked just one while striking out two.

Piotrowski finished 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored while Schuster went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Game Two: Newbury 9, Dominican 6

The Stars erased a five-run deficit, taking a 6-5 lead after a four-run fourth inning before surrendering four runs in the top of the seventh on four hits and an error to fall 9-6, snapping a four-game winning streak.

Piotrowksi and Schuster each had RBI singles in the four-run fifth while Royce Salay (Henderson, Nev.) walked with the bases loaded to give Dominican the lead.

After Jason Gissendaner (Gurnee, Ill.) worked around a one-out hit in the sixth, the left-hander ran into trouble in the seventh when the Nighthawks started the inning with back-to-back doubles to knot the game at 6-6.  Gissendaner than gave way to Quinten Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Newbury took the lead on Hruniak's single with runners on second and third with one out.

In the bottom of the inning, the Stars went down in order, sealing the win for Newbury's McGorry.

Piotrowski rapped out three hits in the loss, extending his hit streak to five games and raising his average to .487.
