The Dominican University baseball team dropped a doubleheader in Fort Myers, Florida, to open the Stars' play at the 2016 Gene Cusic Classic, falling to the Haverford College Fords by a score of 9-4 in both ends of the doubleheader. With the losses, the Stars fall to 1-4 on the season. Dominican will return to the diamond tomorrow morning as they take on the Hiram College Terriers at Terry Park at 9:00 AM ET.
Game One: Haverford 9, Dominican 4 Haverford put three runs up in the bottom of the first inning, building a lead they would never relinquish.
Sophomore right-hander
Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) got the start on the mound for the Stars lasting just two innings before giving way to the Dominican bullpen. Janison was charged with four earned runs on six and one walk while striking out two.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the third, Dominican cut the Fords lead in half.
Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) reached on a bunt single and
Brian Costello (Norridge, Ill.) was allowed to score when Haverford's throw to first skipped into right field.
Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, Ill.) followed with an RBI single.
After Haverford got one run back in the bottom of the third, Dominican's
Mike Piotrowski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) led off the led off the Stars' half of the fourth with a solo home run to left to draw the Stars' within 5-3. Haverford got that run back in the bottom of the fourth and the game went to the sixth, 6-3.
The Stars got an unearned run in the top of the sixth before Haverford put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Dominican's
Robert Bavone (Bellwood, Ill.) worked 3.2 innings out of the bullpen. Bavone was tagged with five runs, just two earned on eight hits while striking out five.
Offensively for the Stars, Piotrowski finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Janison collected two hits, including one double, in four at-bats.
Game Two: Haverford 9, Dominican 4 In game two, six unearned runs proved to be the difference for the Fords. Dominican committed six errors defensively to aid the Fords' offense.
Milne Rojek took the loss on the mound, charge with six runs, only two earned, on seven hits and two walks.
