Stars Battle Back and Pounce Tomcats

Fans both at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Florida, and watching the stream via DUTV got their money's worth Tuesday when the Dominican University baseball team erased a five-run deficit in the top of the first to battle back for a 16-9 win over the Thiel College Tomcats. The win boosts the Stars to 3-4 on the year with an off-day on Wednesday before taking to the diamond on Thursday to take on Bluffton University 12:00 p.m. ET.

The Tomcats roughed up senior left-hander Chance Emlund (Chicago, III.) for five runs in the top of the first, pounding out six hits and leaving one on base. The big blow was a three-run home run over the fence in left field off the bat of Trent Mosely.

After Dominican put two runners on in the first but failed to score, the Stars broke through in bottom of the second, sending 11 hitters to the plate in the inning. The Stars needed just three hits in the rally, the biggest hit was a bases-loaded double by Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) that scored two runs, as the wheels fell off for the Tomcats in the inning, committing an error and hitting three batters and walking another.

The Stars took over the lead, 7-6, in the next inning when Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.).

Thiel evened the score in top of the fourth, plating a single run off of Emlund before the Stars scratched out a run when Royce Salay (Henderson, Nev.) grounded a single down the left field line to score Mike Piotrowski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) who had sparked the two-out rally with single to right-center.

Before the stretch, Thiel racked up three more runs on four hits, forcing Emlund from the game and taking a 9-7 lead. After Emlund surrendered five in the first, the senior battled through 6.1 innings, allowing nine runs on 14 hits and one walk while getting no decision for the outing.

Quinten Hayes (Indianapolis, Ind.) then came on in relief and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings after allowing a pair of inherited runners to cross. Hayes ended the game with a strikeout of Drew Dellert, getting the Tomcats shortstop to chase a curveball down and out of the zone.

The Stars got back in front in the bottom of the seventh, putting up another five spot. Piotrowski delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded in the inning as the freshman drove in three runs all day, going 3-for-5 at the plate to push his season average to .333.

For good measure, the Stars added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach.

For the game, Dominican rapped out 16 hits. Along with Piotrowski, Schuster and Milne Rojek tallied three hits apiece while Janison and Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, Ill.) logged two hits apiece. Natividad drove in five runs for the game, including a bases-clearing triple in the five-run seventh.
