Stars Stay Alive, Knock Out Falcons

The Dominican University baseball team scored a 10-2 victory in an elimination game of the 2016 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament, knocking out the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons.  With the win, the Stars advance to play another elimination game at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon against either Benedictine University or MSOE.

Chance Emlund (Chicago, III.) picked up the win for the Stars, surrendering just two runs on nine hits over 6.2 innings of work before Jason Gissendaner (Gurnee, Ill.) nailed down the win, getting the final seven outs including a pair of strikeouts.  After allowing a run on back-to-back doubles to open the game, Emlund retired the next six hitters and allowed just four more base runners until giving up a run on three singles in the top of the seventh.

Offensively, Dominican did the bulk of the damage in the first two innings, plating two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first before breaking the game open in the second with seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the second.  Cody Schuster (Las Vegas, Nev.) had a pair of RBI singles through the first two frames while Colin Janison (Las Vegas, Nev.) had a double, a walk and scored twice.

After the Falcons scratched across their run in the top of the seventh, Dominican's Mike Piotrowski (Arlington Heights, Ill.) roped an RBI double to the gap in right-center.  For the freshman, it was his 17th double of the season and 27th RBI.

Offensively, the Stars collected 12 hits, two apiece for Schuster, Piotrowski, Nathaniel Natividad (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and Quinlan Milne Rojek (Minneapolis, Minn.).

The Stars are now 18-23 overall and will be one of the last four teams remaining in the double-elimination conference tournament.
