Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second Half Surge Powers Stars Past Warriors

Already leading 1-0 early in the second half, the Dominican University men's soccer team erupted for four goals in a span of 4:16 to open a 5-0 lead en route to a 7-0 victory over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in the Stars' 2016 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) opener.

"We played extremely well," commented Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach, following the match. "We executed our game plan—said we wanted to take the game to them and we did from the opening whistle.  It is a great way to open up conference play."

Adam Yaghmour was credited with the game-winner, scoring the first of his two goals in the match in the 20th minute.  Freshman Isaac Perez helped create the opportunity for Dominican when he won a 50/50 ball near the top of the 18-yard box, heading forward to Nestor Ascencio who rolled a pass along the top of the box to Jonathan Arzeta who played into to Yaghmour on the right side who blasted a shot inside the far post.

Dominican's pressure continued to take the game at Wisconsin Lutheran and the Warriors eventually cracked in the first 15 minutes of the second half when the flood gates opened for the Stars' offense.  Arzeta got his first goal of the season in the 56th minute and that was quickly followed by Ascencio's first tally of the season.  Just 2:38 after Arzeta's goal Yaghmour notched his second goal of the match and then Perez rounded out the onslaught in the 60th minute with his first of two goals on the day.

The first three goals scored in the stretch by Dominican crack the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Record book for fastest three consecutive goals, coming in as the 15th fastest all-time.  The Stars now own three of the fastest 15 times for three consecutive times in the record book, the fastest coming in 2006 when Dominican scored three goals in 1:32 against Benedictine.

In the 82nd minute, Perez shed contact from a Warriors' defender and then turned to goal and ripped a shot from 32-yards out, beating Wisconsin Lutheran's goalkeeper to the far post for his second goal of the season and Gabriel Moreno rounded out the scoring, ripping a shot from 22-yards out to the far post.

For the Stars, Yaghmour finished with a pair of goals and a pair of assists and Ascencio finished with a goal and three assists. Perez scored his first two goals of the season and added a helper while Arzeta had a goal and two assists.

Dominican completely dominated on the stat sheet, peppering Wisconsin Lutheran with 24 shots, putting 11 on goal while the Warriors managed just five shots, putting two on goal.

Gabriel Gongora picks up his third shutout of the season and second in a row, improving to 2-2-2 in goal while lowering his goals against average to 0.96.

"We were better today because of our non-conference schedule," said Baumann.  "Those games make you better.  The guys were prepared and anxious to get conference play underway.  We got some highlight reel goals and got the clean sheet as well."

The Stars, now 2-2-2 overall, continue league play on Saturday, traveling to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to take on the Lakeland College Muskies.  Kickoff is slated for 3:30 p.m.
