Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stars Grind Out Win To Snap Sabres Streak

The Dominican University men's basketball team won their second straight and snapped the Marian University Sabres own five-game winning streak in the process, topping the Sabres 74-69 on Saturday evening at the Igini Sports Forum.  The win pushes the Stars back to .500 on the season at 7-7, the latest Dominican has been .500 since finishing the 2007 season at 14-12.

"The guys showed a lot of toughness today in getting the win," commented Mark White, the Stars' head men's basketball coach. "This was our fourth game in eight days and against a team that has been hot—it was a great team effort."

With the scored tied 66-66, Dominican's Josh Mayberry got a steal on the defensive end of the floor before making the Sabres pay for going under a screen near the top of the key by burying a deep three to give the Stars a lead they would preserve by going 5-for-6 at the foul line in the final thirty seconds of the game.

Dominican shot just 39-percent from the field but buried nine threes in the winning effort while the Sabres shot near 44-percent but connected on just one of their nine attempts from distance.

Tim Robertson paced the Stars with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-15 shooting.  It was Robertson's sixth 20-point effort of the season and fourth in the last five games.

Mayberry finished with 17 points for the Stars while Ben Walker came off the bench to drop in eight, connecting on a pair of threes as part of a 12-0 run for the Stars that spanned 2:58 midway through the second half.

For the Sabres, Alex Manhardt dropped in a team-high 20 points while grabbing ten rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

Dominican, now 5-5 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), heads to Lisle, Illinois, on Tuesday to take on the Benedictine University Eagles at the Rice Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
