Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stars Cruise To Fourth Straight Win

The Dominican University women's basketball team extended their longest winning streak in over five years to four games on Saturday afternoon with a 66-32 victory over the Edgewood College Eagles at the Igini Sports Forum.  Freshman guard Lexi Hoskins poured in a season-high 18 points off the bench while Claudia DeNigris added 15 points, reaching double figures for the fourth straight game and fifth out of the last six games.

"Today was great for our kids," Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach, said after the win. "We had to grind out the last three wins, so it was nice to see us build a lead and keep it. We are slowly maturing."

"Our focus was defense today," continued Johnson. "I challenged them to keep Edgewood under their season scoring average and we were able to do that."

After the teams traded baskets over the first 1:31 of the first quarter, Dominican went on a 15-0 run to end the quarter including a half-court buzzer beater from Amari Stafford to cap the run and put Dominican up 19-4 after one quarter.

After Dominican's Angela Evola dropped in a three to start the second quarter, Edgewood broke a nine-minute scoreless drought when Allison Gordon hit a jumper with 9:17 to go in the second.  A pair of free throws cut Dominican's lead down to 14 but that was the closest the game would be the rest of the way as Dominican answered with a quick 5-0 spurt to push the lead back to 19.

The Stars shot 40-percent, 26-for-65, from the field in the winning effort. Hoskins converted on seven of her ten attempts from the field and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the foul line.  The rookie added five rebounds and five steals in 23 minutes.

DeNigris connected a three three-point field goal attempts as the Stars went 7-for-20 from behind the three-point line.

Freshman Katie Uzoras pulled down ten rebounds in 11 minutes as Dominican controlled the glass, holding a 53-28 margin on the boards.

For Edgewood, Allison Gordon led the way with ten points despite being limited to just 24 minutes due to foul trouble.

Dominican is now 5-11 on the season and 4-8 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) with nine games remaining on the year.  The Stars will hit the road on Tuesday, traveling to Lisle, Illinois, to take on the Benedictine University Eagles.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Benedictine's Rice Center.

"We have a huge game on Tuesday against another set of Eagles," Johnson commented. "I hope that we keep the momentum and run with it."
