The Dominican University women's basketball team led the conference-leading Benedictine University Eagles by as many as ten points in the second quarter but saw that lead evaporate in a 60-49 loss at the Igini Sports Forum on Tuesday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play.
Â
Claudia DeNigris's three with 1:56 to play in the second quarter gave Dominican a 27-17 lead, equaling the Stars' largest lead of the night, as Dominican outscored Benedictine 21-9 in the second quarter to hold a 27-20 lead at the break.
Â
After an
Amari Stafford bucket for the Stars opened the second half, Benedictine used a 16-5 run that spanned more than seven and a half minutes to erase the Stars' advantage and take a 36-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
Â
Benedictine built their lead up to as many as six over the first four and half minutes of the second half only to see
Timiya Ray's layup with 3:06 to play pull Dominican within two at 49-47 only to see the Eagles outscore the Stars 11-2 down the stretch and spoil Dominican's upset bid.
Â
The Stars shot 34-percent from the field while holding the Eagles to 32.7-percent shooting, including a 22-percent clip in the first half.
Â
Shamia Clark led the Stars with 11 points in 22 minutes, shooting 4-for-10 from the field. DeNigris added ten points and shared team-high honors with Ray with eight rebounds.
Â
For the Eagles, Venita Parsons led four in double-figures with 13 points while D'Asia Williams and Andrea Foos added 11 points apiece.
Â
The loss drops the Stars to 1-10 on the season and 0-7 in conference play. Dominican will look to get back on track on Saturday, traveling to Lakeland University to take on the Muskies. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
