Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Fast Start Lifts Stars Past Spartans

The Dominican University women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first thirteen minutes to top the visiting Aurora University Spartans, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field.  With the win, the Stars improve to 12-0-3 overall and jump back in front of the Spartans into first place in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) standings with 17 points at 5-0-2.

Sophomore Josseline Williams tallied both goals for the Stars, scoring the first in the sixth minute after Dominican won a 50-50 ball out near midfield, connecting with Jackie Viola in the attacking third.  Viola poked a pass for Williams, sending the conference's leading goal scorer to the top corner of the 18-yard box on the left side.  Williams cut back in on a defender to get off a shot with her right foot that skipped under the Spartans' Sammie Gelfand, beating the keeper to the far post.

Dominican continued to press forward, cracking the Spartans' backline again in the 13th minute.  This time it was Alyssa Messina with a tackle in Dominican's offensive half of the field before playing a ball that got Williams in behind the Aurora backline.  Williams took one touch towards goal, pulling Gelfand off his line before Williams lifted a shot from the top of the penalty box for her 23rd goal of the season.

The Stars continued to dominate possession throughout the match, surrendering just two shots from distance to the Spartans while getting off 11 shots of their own.

Dominican's Abbey Brown made a pair of saves to pick up her ninth shutout of the season, lowering her NACC-best goals against average to 0.47.

"We talked about getting off to a quick start and scoring early in the pregame meeting," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach, following the match. "We have struggled to score over the last few matches, so we wanted to get back to being sharp from the opening whistle and finish on any early opportunities we had."

"This was a great team win," continued Carrillo. "We didn't let the weather or the big-game pressure get to us. I'm really proud of the team."

Dominican continues to work through conference play on Saturday, hosting the Edgewood College Eagles for a 2:45 p.m. match at West Campus Field on Saturday.
