The Dominican University men's soccer team dominated possession and outshot the Concordia University Chicago Cougars 25-8, but came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision to fall to 10-4-0 on the season and 6-2-0 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).
Â
"There are no excuses after today's result," said Dominican's Erick Baumann. "It is simple—they played hard and worked for a result for ninety minutes. We didn't. We were able to create opportunities but lacked the desire to finish in the final third."
Â
After Dominican opened the match with four shots and a corner in the first 15 minutes, it was the Cougars that broke through in the 17
th minute, capitalizing on a Dominican failed clearance near the top of the 18-yard box. Concordia's Fabian Robles blocked the clear attempt and took a touch into the box before ripping a shot past the Stars'
Brendon Martin.
Â
After outshooting the Cougars 9-4 in the first half yet trailing 1-0, Dominican pressed forward throughout the final 45 minutes, managing 16 more shots including a header by Carlos Ramos that banged off the cross bar in the 63
rd minute.
Â
Dominican put five shots on frame in the second half but Concordia's Roberto Aragon was up to the challenge, making five saves in the second half to preserve the win.
Â
For Dominican,
Nicolo Vitale managed nine shots and
Isaac Perez seven but the Stars' high-powered offense was shutout for just the second time on the season.
Â
The Stars, suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season, will look to get back on track on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to meet the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors in a rematch of the 2016 NACC semifinal match. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
