Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Stars Keep Streak Alive With Win Over Cougars

The Dominican University women's soccer team pushed their program-best unbeaten streak to 17 matches, topping the Concordia University Chicago Cougars, 2-0, to improve to 14-0-3 on the season and 6-0-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC).  The Stars' 14 wins on the season equals the program's single-season win mark, a record set back in 1998 when the Stars went 14-4-2.

"While we didn't get off to the quick start we have the last few matches," commented Carlos Carrillo, the Stars' head coach, "we kept our composure which allowed us to play with confidence until we got on the board.  The fact that we didn't crack under the pressure and kept the clean sheet shows tremendous growth for our program.  I am proud of the effort we put forth for the entire ninety minutes."

After a scoreless first half that saw Dominican hold an 8-2 advantage in shots and 6-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities, Dominican's Kaitlyn Tripp capitalized on a Concordia foul, scoring on a free kick from 21 yards out.  Tripp's strike was just out of the reach of the Cougars' Ally Krajnak and just under the crossbar.  The score was the first of the season and just the second of the career for the senior.

Ten minutes later the nation's leading goal scorer got behind the defense thanks to a through-ball from Alexis Hoskins.  Williams took a touch to her left to split a pair of defenders and get around Krajnak before finishing with a tap in on an open goal.  The goal was the 27th of the season for Williams.

"With how much we have been scoring, it is often easy to overlook the play of the defense," continued Carrillo.  "We were organized and have not given up many opportunities of the last few matches. Getting the clean sheet is important, especially in a match like today where we could not score early. One mistake can lead to chasing the scoreboard and that can change a game."

For the match, Dominican outshot the Cougars, 15-7, putting seven shots on goal while allowing just two shots through to goalkeeper Abbey Brown.

For Brown, the shutout was the 11th of the season, lowering her goals against average to 0.42.  The freshman leads the NACC in both shutouts and goals against average, as well as save percentage (.865).

Dominican will look to close out an undefeated conference season on Saturday, traveling to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to meet the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
