The Dominican University women's volleyball team erased a two-set deficit, scoring a 3-2 (23-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 21-19) win over the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors on the road Friday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. Senior
Kendyl Todd led the comeback, knocking down a career-high 22 kills, including five in the deciding fifth set, to lead the Stars.
"Wisconsin Lutheran played very well tonight, executing through the first two sets while we struggled to find a way to finish," said Dominican University's head coach Brittany Sisk following the five-set thriller. "We dug a little deeper in the third set and found some motivation to push it to five sets. We could not have asked for better leadership on the court and the sideline tonight. The game was on the line multiple times and we found a way to answer each time. That shows a type of poise we have yet to see out of this young team this year."
After watching leads slip away in the first and second set, Dominican flipped the script in the third set. After the Warriors opened a 5-1 lead, the Stars settled in, using a 12-4 run capped by a Todd kill, to open a 13-9 lead they would not relinquish. Todd and
Gillian Jones tallied four kills apiece in the third set while defensively, Dominican posted three blocks in the set, including two block assists each for Todd and classmate
Alex Kisten.
In the fourth set, the Stars posted three more blocks and collected 17 digs to force 11 attack errors for the Warriors.
The fifth set saw Dominican race out to a 13-7 lead before the Warriors stormed back. Dominican had its first chance at match point at 14-13 and then had to stave off set point at 18-17.
Elin Ream finally collected back-to-back kills, her ninth and tenth of the night to complete the Stars' comeback effort.
The Stars hit .166 for the night, paced by Todd who tallied her 22 kills on 40 attempts while committing just three errors. Ream and Jones added ten kills apiece while freshman setter
Anastasia Labadessa collected a season-high 47 assists.
Defensively, the Stars posted eight total blocks, including five for Kisten and four for Todd. In the back row, Jones finished off her second double-double of the season with a season-high 29 digs.
Megan Parker added 15 digs while
Summer Smith tallied 13 digs of her own.
For the Warriors, Britley Grulke finished with a team-high 16 kills and added 20 digs.
Dominican, now 14-10 on the season and 6-3 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), close out conference regular season play on Saturday, taking on the Alverno College Inferno at 12pm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
