The Dominican University men's soccer team closed out the 2017 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) regular season on Monday afternoon, securing a spot in the NACC Tournament semifinals with a 4-2 win over the Edgewood College Eagles. With the win, the Stars (12-4-0, 8-2-0) guarantee a finish in the top two spots in the NACC standings and will host a NACC semifinal match on Tuesday, October 31, at 1:00 p.m. at Dominican's West Campus Field.
The Stars opened the scoring in the 26
th minute when
Isaac Perez served a ball from the left flank finding
Denis Soldo at the back post. Soldo headed the cross down near the top of the six-yard box where
Nicolo Vitale knocked it in for his team-leading 14
th goal of the season.
The Stars' lead was short lived as the score forced Edgewood out of its defensive game plan. Edgewood managed to level the score just two minutes later on Victor Lombardino's third goal of the season and then took a 2-1 lead in the 33
rd minute when Riley Moore finished off a rebound of his own shot.
Edgewood carried the lead into the halftime before Dominican came out fast in the second half. Perez again got loose up the left flank, faking a defender before slotting a pass into the penalty box. A beautiful flick off the side of
Jonathan Arzeta's foot found the side netting just 24 seconds into the half for the seventh goal of the season for Arzeta.
Arzeta later assisted on the go-ahead goal, slipping a pass through the Eagles' back line for
Manuel Pillado who was making a run to the back post in the 65
th minute. Pillado ripped a shot for the far post, beating Edgewood's Dan Dombrowski for his first goal of the season.
The Stars continued to put the game on Edgewood's back line, even after a second caution for delay of game put Dominican a man down for the final 12 minutes of play. The Stars eventually got an insurance goal in the 86th when
Aaron Menyes's distribution up the left sideline skipped over the Edgewood back line getting Perez in behind. After a couple of touches from midfield into the penalty box, Perez fired a shot from inside the six-yard box for his seventh goal of the season.
"Our second half determination, work rate and execution made the difference in getting today's result," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' head coach, following the win.
Holding a 9-7 advantage in shots in the first half, Dominican only surrendered two shots in the second half to outshoot the Eagles, 25-9 for the match. The Stars put 12 shots on frame, forcing Dombrowski to make six saves while Eagle defenders cleared another two that were ticketed for the goal. The Stars also managed to earn seven corners without surrendering a corner kick to Edgewood.
The Stars will now sit idle until the NACC Tournament semifinals, enjoying more than a week to rest and recover before looking to win their ninth NACC Tournament championship in 12 years.
