Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Stars Strike Gold At Benedictine

The Dominican University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, winning their sixth straight overall, with a 2-1 overtime win over the Benedictine University Eagles on Jonathan Arzeta's golden goal in the 100th minute in Lisle, Illinois, on Wednesday night.

"That was a good, hard fought road win tonight," said Erick Baumann, the Stars' 23rd-year head coach, following the victory. "I'm proud of the guys…there is a high compete level and no-quit mentality with this team right now."

After a scoreless first half, Dominican's Adam Yaghmour made a perfectly timed run to get on the end of a ball slipped through the Benedictine backline by Arzeta to open the scoring.  Running to his left, Yaghmour took a touch from 12-yards out to settle before poking a shot back to the far post to beat Benedictine's Antonio Marti Polo.  The score was Yaghmour's 12th of the season.

Needing to press forward, the Benedictine University Eagles pressed forward, eventually leveling the score in the 77th minute when Yair Ortega one-touched Aldeiron Smith into the corner. Smith swung a cross towards the penalty spot where Larry Meehan got on the end of it and headed a shot to the near post that beat Dominican's Aaron Menyes.

Benedictine continued to keep the pressure on Dominican throughout the remainder of regular time but Dominican's back line withstood the run, blocking three shots and allowing just one more on frame that was covered by Menyes.

The Eagles' lone shot in the overtime came in the 93rd minute when Santiago Beltran tried to volley a shot from 25 yards out that went well wide of the goal.

Nearly seven minutes of match time went by without a shot from either side until the final minute of the overtime period when Denis Soldo connected with Yaghmour on a run behind the backline and into the box, drawing Marti Polo off his line. Yaghmour showed tremendous patience, rolling a pass for Arzeta who was streaking up the middle.  Arzeta was able to one-touch a shot with an open goal for the game-winner.  For Arzeta, the score was his fifth of the season.

After Dominican outshot the Eagles 8-5 in the first half, Benedictine finished with a slight 16-14 advantage in shots and 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.  The Stars were able to double-up on the Eagles in corner kicks, 8-4.

In goal, Menyes and freshman Brendon Martin made two saves apiece with Martin getting the start in goal and Menyes playing the final 55 minutes.

With the win, the Stars improve to 9-2-0 on the season and 5-0-0 in league play with a match against the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons next on the slate.  Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in Mequon, Wisconsin.

"We now need to get some recovery and restart work to get ready for another big road test on Saturday," continued Baumann.
