Timiya Ray scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the season but it was not enough as the Dominican University women's basketball team came up short, 60-50, in the Stars' Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) opener against the MSOE Raiders on Saturday afternoon.
After Dominican shot 10-for-16 from the field to jump out to a 24-20 lead after the first quarter, the Stars' offense stalled in the second period, connecting on just one field goal and getting outscored 15-3 to fall behind 35-27 at the break.
The Raiders continued to build on their lead in the second half, building to a 16-point, 58-42, advantage with 6:16 to play after Amy Reiser connected on a three. The Stars were able to hold the Raiders to just two points the rest of the way but could not get closer than ten before time expired.
"Our inability to finish put-backs and contested layups contributed to this loss," said Gabby Johnson, the Stars' sixth-year head coach. "We will get in the gym and continue to develop our young players and continue to instill a lot more confidence in this squad."
The loss drops Dominican to 2-2 on the season with a non-conference matchup with Illinois Tech scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Igini Sports Forum.
