The Dominican University men's volleyball team rallied after dropping the first set to top the Greenville College Panthers in four sets (17-25, 25-21, 25-13, 25-23) on Friday night in Greenville, Illinois.
Â
After the Panthers managed to hit .417 in the opening set, Dominican's block slowed the Greenville attack the rest of the night, posting 9.5 total blocks in the winning effort. Setter
Alex Coyne and
Adam Eboli led the effort at the net. Coyne collected five total blocks with four block assists and one solo block while Eboli collected four block assists.
Â
"While it wasn't our cleanest match of the season, I'm overall happy with the win against a good Greenville team," said Dominican University assistant coach
Doug Burchett. "Once we settled down after the first set, we stayed in control the rest of the night. Our block did a great job of slowing their attack and then we really did a great job of turning defensive plays into kills."
Â
Offensively, the Stars started slow before heating up in the second and third sets. Dominican hit .252 for the match after posting just a .115 attack percentage in the opening set.Â
Luke Spicer led the way with 15 kills on 27 swings while committing just four errors. Spicer had five and six kills respectively in the second and third sets. Eboli then took over for Dominican in the fourth set, knocking down six kills on six attempts to finish with a season-high 12 kills in the match.Â
Jeremy Royko rounded out three Stars in double-digit kills, collecting ten kills on the night. Coyne dished out 37 assists in the winning effort.
Â
"Alex did a great job of finding our middles in transition plays," commented Burchett. "We have been working on that a lot in practice."
Â
Dominican, now 5-1 and riding a five-match winning streak, has a quick turnaround, returning to the court tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. in St. Louis, taking on the Fontbonne University Griffins in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) play.
