Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Stars Pick Up Two More Wins

The Dominican University men's volleyball team hit the road on Friday, picking up a pair of victories in Springfield, Ohio, to run their program-best winning streak to 11 matches. In the matinee, the Stars swept the Wittenberg University Tigers (25-19, 26-24, 25-18) in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League (MCVL) play before knocking off the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen in four sets (31-29, 23-25, 27-25, 25-19).

"A win is a win," said Dominican University head coach Dan Ames. "We are getting better every day but errors set us back at times…the rest of the skill is there. We turn our focus to Saturday now and Mount St. Joseph."

In the win over the Tigers, the Stars hit .292, knocking down 44 kills as a team on 96 attacks while committing 16 errors.  Jeremy Royko paced the attack with a season-high 15 kills on 29 attempts to hit a season-best .414.  The senior got better as the match went on and became setter Alex Coyne's primary option.  After knocking down four kills on eight swings in the opening set, Royko tallied six kills on 11 attempts in the clinching set.

Coyne dished out 29 assists, using seven different hitters in the winning effort.  Michal Kawa collected eight kills to just one error on 19 attempts while Luke Spicer added seven kills on 20 swings but also committed a season-high seven errors.

Defensively, the Stars posted five total blocks and collected 35 digs to hold the Tigers to a .193 attack percentage, forcing 13 errors while allowing just 30 kills.  Mason Solbrig led the charge at the net, posting a solo block and three block assists while Coyne, Kawa and libero Brooks Nevrly shared team-high honors with six digs apiece.

In the nightcap, the Stars committed 19 hitting errors and a season-high 18 serving errors to keep the Kingsmen in the match.

Kawa, Solbrig and Spicer paced the attack while Coyne dished out a season-high 51 assists.  Kawa knocked down 17 kills while Solbrig and Spicer added 13 and 12 respectively.

Defensively, the Stars put three Stars in double-digits with digs as the team posted a season-best 59 digs.  Nevrly led the way with 15 digs while Coyne and Spicer collected 14 and ten digs respectively.

The Stars are now 11-1 on the season and 7-0 in the MCVL to lead the MCVL Eastern Division.  The Stars will return to league play on Saturday, taking a trip to Cincinnati to take on the Mount St. Joseph Lions at noon.
