Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stars On Losing End Of Seesaw Matchup

The Dominican University women's basketball team came up short in a game that featured 12 ties and 15 lead changes before the Lakeland College Muskies were able to pull away from the Stars late, 77-64.

Dominican's Claudia DeNigris nailed one of her three three-point field goals with 3:29 to play to pull the Stars within three, 62-59, but Lakeland then went on a 9-0 run that spanned 1:51 to pull away and then put the game away, connecting on six of eight free throw attempts in the final minute.

Freshman Timiya Ray finished with a team-high 13 points, leading four scorers in double-figures for Dominican in the losing effort. DeNigris and Amari Stafford notched 12 apiece while Lexi Hoskins came off the bench to add ten points.

Dominican shot just 15-for-54 from the field but managed to stay in the game, connecting on nine three-point field goals.  DeNigris and Hoskins buried three apiece while Stafford connected on 2-of-4 from distance.

Lakeland was paced by Bailey Grayvold's game-high 23.  The senior was just 4-for-12 from the field but made 18 trips to the foul line, connecting on 15.  As a team, Lakeland went 28-for-38 at the charity stripe in a game that saw 50 total fouls.

"I'm very proud of this group," said Gabby Johnson, the Stars' head coach, following the game. "We struggled against Lakeland at their place, but they never backed down today."

The Stars, now 7-14 on the season and 5-11 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC), hit the road on Tuesday, heading to Aurora University for a 7:00 p.m. tilt with the Spartans.
