The Dominican University women's basketball team picked up their eighth win of the season on Tuesday night, out-gunning the Aurora University Spartans, 82-60, to move to 8-14 on the season and 6-11 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play. The Stars shot a season-best 56-percent and scored a season-high 82 points in the win.
Leading by eight, 38-30, at the half, Dominican scored 44 points in the second half, shooting 18-for-27 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three, while smothering the Spartans defensively to hold Aurora to just 10-for-37 shooting after the break.
"This group is special in the way they go about their business," said
Gabby Johnson following the win. "We went back and forth for a while tonight with Aurora but the ability to refocus at halftime is a testament to the growth we have experienced as a program."
Timiya Ray paced the Stars with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists, four blocks and a steal in 30 minutes of work. The freshman shot 7-for-11 from the field and converted on five of eight attempts from the foul line.
Claudia DeNigris added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting while
Amari Stafford scored 13, ten in the second half, to round out three scorers in double-figures for Dominican.
"We had contributions from everyone tonight," commented Johnson, "but Timiya allowed us to feed off of her. She did a little of everything we needed, allowing her teammates to follow her lead in what was a great team effort."
For the Spartans, Ally Van Bogaert led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Dominican closes out the road portion of their 2016-2017 schedule on Saturday, heading to Milwaukee to take on the MSOE Raiders at the Kern Center. The Stars then return home for the final two games of the season, including a River Forest Rivalry matchup with the Concordia University Chicago Cougars on Wednesday, February 15.
