Stars Downed By Swarthmore

The Dominican University baseball team came up short in a 10-4 loss to the Swarthmore College Garnet on Thursday afternoon at Terry Park, dropping to 2-6 on the season and 2-3 on the Stars' trip to Fort Myers, Florida, for the 2017 Gene Cusic Classic.

Jason Gissendaner took the loss on the mound for Dominican despite allowing just two base runners through the first four innings.

In the fifth, the Garnet finally broke through, loading the bases with nobody out before Gissendaner limited the damage thanks to a 4-6-3 double play that allowed the first run of the game to score.

After Swarthmore tacked on three more runs in the sixth, Dominican got an RBI single from Matt Segovia who lined a ball up the middle to push across Colin Janison.

Gissendaner's day ended when he walked the first hitter in the seventh, giving way to the Stars' bullpen. The Garnet went on to score four times in the frame on three hits and an error to open an 8-1 lead after seven innings.

Dominican cut into the lead in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of a wild pitch, passed ball, two walks and two hit batters to score three runs before Mike Piotrowski lined out to the warning track in centerfield with the bases loaded to end the inning.

After Swarthmore got two runs back in the top of the ninth, the Stars put two runners on in the bottom of the ninth including a pinch-hit single for Medin Milla but stranded those runners, the 13th and 14th runners left on base by the Stars in the loss.

Gissendaner was charged with five runs on eight hits and a walk over six-plus innings, falling to 0-2 on the season.

The Stars managed eight hits at the plate, including two apiece for Janison and Brian Costello, and drew four walks.  The Garnet also hit seven batters but Dominican left two or more runners on base in six of the nine innings.

Dominican will look to get back on track on Friday, taking on the Rivier University Raiders in a noon doubleheader at the Player Development Complex.  The trip then comes to a close on Saturday with a single game against Illinois College.
