The Dominican University softball team continued to dominate their opponents at the Gene Cusic Classic, picking up a pair of shutout victories on Friday to run their winning streak to ten games. The Stars are outscoring their opponents in Florida by an average of 8.3 runs per game and batting .446 on the trip.
On Friday, Michelle Behrens and
Olivia Babusci combined on a six-hit shutout in an 11-0 win over the Wheelock College Wildcats while
Sydney Kuderna struck out seven in a complete-game, two-hit shutout of the Salem State Vikings, picking up the 9-0 win.
With the wins, the Stars move to 11-3 on the season with the final two games of the Florida road trip on the schedule for Saturday. Dominican will meet the College at Bockport Golden Eagles at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time before closing the trip with the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford Panthers at 10:00 a.m. in Naples, Florida.
Game One: Dominican 11, Wheelock 0 (5 Inn.)
The Stars scored early and often against the Wildcats, pushing across two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first and never looked back. The Stars pounded out 12 hits in the win, two apiece for
Gabby Curran,
Alena Valenzuela and
Emaly Burns.
Alyssa Domico,
Ali Woitovich and Burns each drove in two runs while Curran and Burns scored twice each.
In the circle, Behrens improved to 2-1 on the season, scattering three hits over three innings while striking out two and walking none. Babusci then came on to pitch the final two innings, pitching around three hits and walk to preserve the shutout.
Game Two: Dominican 9, Salem State 0 (6 Inn.)
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Stars struck for seven runs including a two-run triple for Curran and a two-run double for Woitovich to top Salem State, 9-0.
Katie Fredrick brought home the Stars' first run of the game when she bunted with
Marissa Burns out at second. Fredrick beat out the bunt and the throw went into right field allowing Burns to come across for the early lead.
The score stayed 1-0 until the fifth when Domico laid down a squeeze bunt with runners at second and third, scoring
Jacadi Rivera.
Kuderna was masterful in the circle, limiting the Vikings to just four baserunners all game. The lefty surrendered just two hits and two walks to move to 7-2 on the season.
