Stars Slug Their Way To Two More Wins

The Dominican University softball team slugged their way to a pair of victories on Monday in Naples, Florida, belting five home runs to top the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes and Kenyon College Ladies to move to 5-3 on the season and 4-0 on the team's spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida.  Sophomore Gabby Curran blasted a pair of solo home runs in game one as the Stars topped Geneva College11-3 in six innings. In game two it was Ali Woitovich's turn to knock out a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, as the Stars knocked off Kenyon, 17-3 in five innings.

The Stars return to the diamond tomorrow morning, taking on the Albion College Britons at 9:00 a.m. in Fort Myers before meeting the Mount Mary University Blue Angels at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time.

Game One: Dominican 11, Geneva College 3 (6 Inn.)

Curran deposited the first pitch the Stars saw in the bottom of the fence as the Stars staked Sydney Kuderna to an early 1-0 lead. Dominican then added to that lead in the bottom of the third as Gabi Alfaro launched a two-run home run over the fence in right center.

The Golden Tornadoes got back into the game in the game in the top of the fourth when Casey Frakosovsky found the seats in left-center for a two-run homer before Kuderna regrouped and got the next two hitters.

Curran got one of those runs back for the Stars in the bottom of the inning, launching her second home run of the game to straight-away centerfield.

Geneval College stole a run back in the top of the fifth before Dominican put the game away.  Woitovich started a three-run rally with a leadoff double and then scored when Katie Fredrick singled to right.  Alena Valenzuela followed with a RBI single through the left side of the infield and #Elizabeth Cordes, running for Valenzuela, then scored when Jacadi Rivera doubled to the fence in left-center.

Already leading 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth, the Stars struck for four more runs, including the game-ending hit by Rivera that plated Emaly Burns to give the Stars an eight-run, 11-3, lead in the sixth inning.

Kuderna went the distance in the circle to improve to 2-2 on the season.  The sophomore allowed just three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

Curran, Woitovich and Fredrick finished with three hits apiece.

Game Two: Dominican 17, Kenyon 3

The bats continued to sizzle, staking Dominican to an early 3-0 lead when Woitovich homered to score Curran and Alyssa Domico in the bottom of the first. Rivera added an RBI double and Curran an RBI single in the bottom of the second as the Stars opened a 5-0 lead.

Britny Patterson pulled the Ladies within two, 5-3, with one swing of the bat when she connected for a three-run home run to centerfield in the top of the third.  The hit was the lone extra-base hit surrendered by freshman Cat Klostermann who limited the Ladies to just four hits over four innings of work.

Dominican extended the lead to 7-3 after three thanks to RBI singles by Rivera and Curran and then put up ten runs in the bottom of the fourth, including a grand slam by Woitovich, to put the game out of reach.

Klostermann improved to 2-0 on the season, giving up three runs, two earned, over four innings.  The rookie struck out three and walked two and now has 18 strikeouts in 18 innings.

Woitovich led the offensive outburst in game two, going 2-for-3 with two home runs, seven runs batted in and a walk.
