Stars Let Early Lead Slip Away

The Dominican University baseball team jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings before the offense stalled and the University of Chicago Maroons scored six unanswered runs in a 7-6 loss for the Stars.

"We started hot out of the gates and had an early lead," said Dominican University head coach Steve Hardman. "Unfortunately, we sat on the lead and had one blow up inning that gave them the lead.  It is unfortunate because we had some good outings on the mound on a staff day. Right now we just don't know how to win."

Frankie Sessa's two-run single in the top of the first staked the Stars to an early 2-0 lead.  After the Maroons got one run back in the bottom of the first, Dominican answered with a four-run third inning.  Matt Segovia continued to swing a hot bat, plating Sessa and Colin Janison with a double down the left field line.  KJ Wilk promptly followed with a two-run single to give the Stars a five-run lead.

An RBI single for Chicago's Payton Jancsy, narrowed the Stars' lead to 6-2 in the fourth before Chicago managed five runs on six hits and an error in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead.

Kanoa Ikeda-Flynn lasted four innings in his first collegiate start.  The freshman allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one before exiting the game with a 6-1 lead.  Royce Salay three a spotless fifth while Austin Michals allowed just one hit in the sixth.  Dominican then used three pitchers in the seventh before Noah Loeffler tossed the final 1.2 innings.

At the plate, Sessa collected three hits, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs while six other players picked up one hit apiece.

For the Maroons, Arno Curtis was credited with the win, working a scoreless top of the seventh before the Maroons took the lead in the bottom of the frame.

The loss drops the Stars to 6-16 on the season with a return to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play on deck as they host the Rockford University Regents on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium.
