Stars Take Two From Warriors

The Dominican University softball team won their fifth and sixth straight games, sweeping a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader from the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors, 5-3 and 6-0, at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Illinois, on Wednesday evening.

Dominican's Cat Klostermann picked up both wins in the circle, scattering two hits over five innings while giving up one run in game one before returning to the circle in game two to throw five scoreless innings.  On the day, Klostermann walked just two while striking out five.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Ellen Davis tripled to center after Abby Akright singled with one out.  Klostermann stranded Davis at third and didn't surrender another hit in the series opener, allowing the Dominican bats to get to work.

The Stars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Gabby Curran singled through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded, plating Jacadi Rivera and Sydne Kuderna.

Gabi Alfaro added to the Stars' lead when she led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to the stands in left.  Dominican went on to score two more runs in the frame, capitalizing on a trio of Warriors' fielding errors to open a 5-1 lead after three innings.

After a pair of scoreless frames, Kuderna replaced Klostermann in the circle in the top of the fifth.  Karah Ritacco greeted Kuderna with an infield single.  A single and two outs later, Davis again delivered for the Warriors, this time with a two-run double to pull WCL within two, 5-3.

Kuderna then settled down, pitching around a two-out walk in the seventh to seal the victory.

Rivera collected two of the Stars' five hits, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

The Warriors loss was charged to Abby Mahsem who fell to 4-5 on the season.

In game two, Klostermann combined with Michele Behrens for a complete-game, two-hit shutout.  Klostermann allowed just three base runners through the first five innings to improve to 8-2 in the circle, before Behrens tossed a pair of spotless innings.

The Stars, now 25-9 overall and 10-6 in the NACC, return to play on Sunday, traveling up to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to meet the Alverno College Inferno.  First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
