Game Recap: Baseball |

Stars And Lumber Jacks Trade Wins

The Dominican University baseball team entertained the Northland College Lumber Jacks on Monday afternoon at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium with the sides splitting a non-conference doubleheader.  The Lumber Jacks edged the Stars in game one, 8-7, before the Stars took game two, 5-4, on a bases-loaded, walk-off single by Eli Geha in the bottom of the seventh.

With the split, the Stars move to 12-21 on the season with a non-conference matchup with the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks on deck for Wednesday.

"We played extremely poor today and had no energy on the field," said Steve Hardman, the Stars' sixth-year head coach following the series. "At a time of the year when you should be playing your best baseball, we are playing poorly."

Game One: Northland 8, Dominican 7

After the Stars opened a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, the Lumber Jacks scored the next six runs of the ballgame to open a 6-2 lead in the middle of the fifth.

Dominican scored twice in the bottom of the fifth without the aid of a hit, narrowing the gap down to 6-4.  The Lumber Jacks answered with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth to push the lead back to four, 8-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Colin Janison plated Mike Buckley with a sacrifice fly before Joe Kukla pulled Dominican within a run with a two-run single.  However, the Stars stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base when Matt Segovia flew out to left.

After Noah Loeffler worked a scoreless top of the seventh for the Stars, Buckley singled up the middle with one away to put the tying run on base.  Hardman called on Brian Costello to pinch hit but Costello bounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.

Colton Malich took the loss for Dominican, surrendering five runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings.  For Northland, Carson Ferry picked up the win, improving to 3-3.  Ferry worked into the fifth, allowing four runs on three hits and six walks.

Game Two: Dominican 5, Northland 4

The Stars opened a 2-0 lead after one as Frankie Sessa and Matt Segovia collected RBI singles in the inning.

After Northland got a run back in the top of the second, Costello singled to plate Geha to push the Stars' lead back to two, 3-1, after two innings.

The Lumber Jacks pulled back within a run when Sam Lehman homered to left with two away in the top of the third.

In the fourth, Costello pushed the Stars' lead back to two, singling through the left side of the infield to push across Geha for a 4-2 Dominican advantage.

After single runs for the Lumber Jacks in the fifth and seventh innings evened the game at 4-4, Dominican loaded the bases with one away in the bottom of the seventh for Geha.  Working a 2-0 count, Geha yanked the next pitch to left, allowing Mike Morelli, on to run for Sessa, to trot home for the winning run.

Geha finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored as Dominican collected nine hits in the winning effort.

Austin Michals picked up the win on the mound, surrendering one unearned run on one hit while striking out two in the top of the seventh.  With the win, Michals improves to 2-0 on the season.
